Our mission was distasteful to us but we had no choice. More than four years had passed since the Battle of the Frigidus River but the manpower shortfall in the Army of Italy, that had been derived to begin with mainly from the Army of Gaul, was still severe. The short term solution was to make up the numbers from the frontier garrisons. "General Miles and the Twilight of the Frontier Army" is a book that deals equally with both of its' title subjects. Wooster brings us both the glory of history and the drudgery of its' shadows. It leaves one with a rather melancholy feeling as a way of life drew to a close along with its' century.

The book — available today with the main title of “The Falcon” by John Tanner — is one of the most important documents of life in a changing culture on the fringes of the American frontier.
